THE 18-HOLE CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE
The routing for the main 18-hole course at Rockwind was inspired by a famous golf course in Scotland; Muirfield, The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. The front nine provides for an outer “loop” that surrounds the interior back nine and plays in a clockwise direction around the perimeter of the property and into the native vegetation. This outer loop at Rockwind allows for a full experience of the site that catches glimpses of the train tracks, a windmill, The Soaring Society of America headquarters and the virgin ground that surrounds the course. This layout allows the player to experience all aspects of the site, including the angles of the wind for that day. The back nine is laid out as an inside “core” layout starting and finishing around a new large pond and stream channel feature. The interior back nine then provides for a more inclusive feeling having shared turf areas with a reversed, counterclockwise order of holes playing around the irrigation pond and large masses of turf.
The course has five sets of tees with lengths ranging from 7,100 from the tips down to approximately 4,100 for the forward “express” tees. Par for everyday play is 72, but can be adjusted to 71 or 73 depending on the course set up. The fairways will be expansive and mown tight around the greens and bunkers which will give the player a true sense of the short game necessary in links golf. The layout of the course also pays specific attention to the differences of how the single digit handicapper plays the course compared to the average player. In most instances, the aggressive line appears to the player as the preferred line of play. However, if this line is taken, the player may find an awkward stance, a downhill lie to an uphill green, or a more heavily bunkered green. The player whose normal shot favors a high fade to the right will most times find himself with a more preferred line, a better view to the green, or a more desirable stance.
